Contemporary engagement rings
What’s a contemporary engagement ring?
To make a ring that feels current and fresh, we take inspiration from all the design eras that have come before and refine them into something totally new. Contemporary engagement rings are defined by sleek modern lines and unexpected design elements that redefine what jewellery can be.
Contemporary engagement rings are marked by the level of innovation that went into their design and the exciting types of gemstones they feature. With advancements in technology and 3D printing, we can now create more intricate designs that allow for elegant features such as mixed metals, engraved details, and ultra slim bands.
What’s the most popular style of engagement ring?
Some of our most popular engagement ring designs fall into the contemporary category. Minimalist yet impactful, there will always be people who naturally gravitate towards stylish designs that skip over lavish embellishment. Our most popular design, the Grace, is solitaire with a thin plain band with a six type setting. This highly secure setting type is perfect for everyday wear and looks great with a round brilliant diamond—the most popular diamond shape for this design.
After the round diamond solitaire, our second most popular engagement ring style is the Demure. The Demure features a thin band, loved for its minimal and delicate feel. Thin bands are a characteristically contemporary design feature, as the gentle line that the ring carves around the finger drives home a ‘less is more’ approach to modern aesthetics. Another of our designs, the Dulcet, has a thin band like the Demure but features a dazzling fishtail pavé. If you love a contemporary design but want a bit of extra sparkle, the Dulcet is a great choice.
What’s the most popular diamond shape?
The most popular diamond shape is the round brilliant diamond. This iconic shape is seen by many as the default for diamonds, with a perfect combination of symmetry and sparkle. While there’s no going wrong with a round diamond, we always encourage people to get familiar with the full range of cuts and shapes available. The oval cut, cushion cut, or princess cut have become popular in recent years as customers have embraced designs that are unique and original.
The oval diamond is our second most popular shape, making up 24% of our total diamond sales. The shape is loved for its round lines and graceful elongated shape, which flatters by moving with the natural curves of your finger. The most popular setting for an oval engagement ring is a thin band solitaire, which is a very contemporary design.
The third most popular diamond shape is the cushion cut. This diamond shape has been popularised by celebrities such as Meghan Markle, whose cushion cut trilogy engagement ring is a perfect example of a contemporary and elegant engagement ring style. A cushion cut is a great balance between the geometry of a square cut and the brilliance of a round, allowing for maximum sparkle while retaining an air of originality.
Can I use coloured gemstones in a contemporary engagement ring design?
Coloured gemstones are very on trend, with our customers consistently requesting sapphires in exciting colours such as pink or teal.
Pastel colours are an evergreen favourite, with blush shades being the perfect expression of romance.
Today, classic blue sapphires or emeralds aren’t the only coveted colours: from champagne to peach sapphires, even black diamonds can be perfect for those looking for a contemporary and alternative engagement ring.
How much does an engagement ring cost?
A contemporary engagement ring can vary in cost depending on the style, setting, and, most importantly, the centre diamond or gemstone. A solitaire ring is the least expensive setting for a contemporary engagement ring, starting at £840 excluding the centre stone. A setting with pavé or accent diamonds would begin at £1,200, excluding the centre stone. Depending on the diamond or gemstone chosen, this will affect the final price of the engagement ring.
