One of our favourite couples who embarked on the bespoke process together share their love story. We speak to both Andrew & Forrest to hear more about their journey.

How did you meet?

“We actually met five years ago in our freshman year at college, at a church we both went to at the time. Andrew was studying accounting and I was studying nursing.”

What was the moment you knew he was the one?

“For me, I knew he was the one soon after we started dating and Andrew transferred to a school three hours away. I think it was then that I realised I had to be with him. That’s when it really hit me.”

Do you have a favourite memory of a time you shared together?

“It was while we were living apart in the fall just before we got engaged, I went up to Nashville and we went to a pumpkin patch – it was beautiful weather and we had the most fun day together.”

What is it about your partner that makes you smile?
“He’s the funniest person I know, which everyone loves. He’s one of the nicest people, he’s kind, humble and smart. Just, I mean, I could go on and on.”

“She’s got the sweetest personality that you could imagine. She’s so unassuming and she doesn’t ruffle feathers – she wants to go with the flow. Yeah, she’s such a hard worker. I see it every day – around the apartment. She cooks me dinner which is the biggest part, right?”

What was most important to you when designing your engagement ring?
“Well, I mean I know rings are the most important thing for a girl. They might not say it, but they want a ring they can be proud of that they can show off to their friends. They’re not being boastful about it, they just want other people to be excited with them so knew it needed to be exactly right.

So I let Forrest take the reigns on the ring and she designed her own. She didn’t know when she was getting it or when I was buying it, but I let her design it because I knew it would mean a lot for her to get exactly what she wanted.”

How did you propose?
“I came home one weekend at our favourite time of year, fall. It was a little cool out and we went to a park in our hometown where we always go to walk. We took a picnic and found a secluded spot by a stream. I think she started to realise what was about to happen – obviously she didn’t want to come out and say it and ruin the surprise.”

I was like ‘how do I start this?’ It was a pretty nerve-wracking experience, but once I began, I knew it would all be ok because she started to smile.

How do you feel about the finished ring?

Oh, I absolutely love my ring. It’s perfect.

My design consultant did an amazing job, right down to the style of claws that are set around my diamond. I’ve gotten so many compliments on it, it’s so sparkly and so unique.

What is the thing you’ve always dreamed of doing together?

We love travelling – we got married in Germany, but our families weren’t there so it would be amazing to travel with them. London is actually next on our list!

We just want to continue living and loving each other and having our family with us.

Why the halo engagement ring is my favourite style

While the solitaire is a classic, sophisticated and affordable choice, I personally feel that the halo engagement ring style allows our customers to create a sentimental, one-of-a-kind engagement ring. For this reason, my favourite style is the halo.

The style of a halo engagement ring allows customers to purchase a smaller centre diamond while the ‘halo’ effect of the surrounding diamonds gives the effect of a larger centre stone.

There are many creative ways in which you can modify a classic halo engagement ring to create a unique and stunning ring.

Here are some of the halo engagement rings that our customers have worked with us to craft:

This halo engagement ring celebrates the use of colour through the two-tone white and yellow gold and the deep blue cushion cut sapphire set in the centre. The halo diamonds almost serve as flower petals and a touch of milgrain around the edge creates a vintage feel to the overall ring.

One of my favourites is this halo engagement ring show below. Rotated at a 45-degree angle, the diamond halo takes on the shape of a cushion, framing the round brilliant centre diamond. The colourless diamonds are set in a rose gold setting, creating a stunning contrast between the icy white and warm blush tones.

Why settle for just one halo when you can have two? The double halo engagement ring shown below uses a combination of colours and metals to achieve this visually impressive piece. The majority of the ring setting is made in platinum while the central halo with fancy-intense-pink diamonds is in rose gold, to accentuate the pink hues. To finish this clean, linear design, four eagle claws hold the rectangular cushion-cut diamond in place.

Some of our customers, especially those who prefer a more vintage-inspired design, have chosen to create halo engagement rings that frame the centre stone in a not-so-traditional way.

Finally, this halo engagement ring below shows how a metal, like yellow gold, can look modern with a unique, floral inspired design. Classic engagement ring elements including a round centre diamond, blue sapphires and yellow gold, have been merged with an inspired floral theme and intricate petal details, to craft this distinctive halo engagement ring.

At Rare Pink I am responsible for the overall leadership and direction of the company so I don’t always get to see every single engagement ring setting that comes through our office. However, I do try to see as many as possible.

As a company that specialises in bespoke designed engagement ring settings, there is always something new, beautiful and entirely unique coming through our workshop. So it is with great pleasure that I am able to share with you, my favourite engagement ring settings.

Lobster

Let’s start off with a bit of fun! One of our customers, a chef, told us his dream was to make an engagement ring setting inspired by his passion in life, cooking.

We designed a ring that takes inspiration from the claws of a lobster. From afar, this engagement ring setting could be mistaken for a modern tapered shoulder. On closer inspection, you can see the individual grooves and detail that represent the claws and pincers of a lobster.

In the past, we’ve made rings inspired by nature’s beauty, but this design incorporated the physicality of a lobster as well as the passion for life and love of this couple, making it a truly personalised ring.

Pink

As a company that has the word “pink” in our brand, people often ask us if we create pink diamond engagement rings? Yes, we do, though not often. The truth is pink diamond engagement rings are very rare and thus carry a high premium.

Of those we have done, my favourite is shown below. I love its simplistic beauty. Six small diamonds sit on the shoulders of this platinum engagement ring setting and the centre pink diamond is set in four rose gold claws. I also love the cushion shape, which is my favourite diamond cut.

While this ring costs close to £50,000 in total, the engagement ring setting can be recreated using a pink sapphire to produce a very similar look for between £2,000 to £5,000.

Forty-Five

When it comes to aesthetics, I am a sucker for symmetry, precision and a splash of colour.

The ring below is named “Forty-Five” because, unusually, the diamond is set at a 45 degree angle to the engagement ring setting.

The ethereal halo of blue sapphires set around the centre diamond makes the centre stone appear larger than it is, a clever trick for anyone hoping to get the best value for their price point.

Once again a cushion cut diamond sits in the middle of this diamond and blue sapphire engagement ring setting to complete a design that always draws attention and admiration.

Fluere

One of the most popular styles our customers request are those that have floral elements. From leaves and flowers to vines and other exotic plants, designs based on floral elements are a beautiful and feminine way to personalise engagement ring settings.

The ring below is one of my favourite floral engagement ring settings. There is a perfect balance between floral and classic elements with the small marquise cut diamonds representing the leaves and the twisted shoulders, dusted with pave diamonds symbolising a vine or stem. Rose gold brings a warmth to the ring, in contrast to the icy white of platinum or white gold.

Rose

Sure, the ring below looks nothing like a rose. The reason for its name is the diamond cut with which this engagement ring has been set, which is called a “rose cut”.

Such diamonds have a very different, vintage look in comparison to the most widely used brilliant round cut. Dating back to the Georgian and Victorian eras, rose cut diamonds feature a flat base with a dome-shaped crown and have a different faceting structure to a brilliant cut diamond.

Set in this trilogy setting, the rose cut diamond is framed with two triangle side diamonds, giving the overall ring a unique and edgy aesthetic.

Ying Yang

Balance and harmony, two design aesthetics I really enjoy seeing in our engagement rings are demonstrated in this rose gold engagement ring setting.

The ring has been set with two old European cut diamonds, while the band has been set with our vivid fancy pink melee diamond, creating a truly Rare Pink bespoke ring.

This style is known as a ‘moi et toi’ ring, symbolic of ‘me and you’ in both life and the representation of two diamonds, working together as one.

There are few things as empowering as the choice to dress yourself every day and sometimes we take this for granted. I still remember my mother’s 90s fashion experimentations on me—needless to say, I’m still in therapy. (Just kidding mom!)

As we’ve just witnessed in London Fashion Week 2016, trends are being inspired by the 90s and early 2000s —blasts from the past transformed into the fashion world’s newest season. Bold colours, animal prints, neon furs and sequins—must have elements on the runways. If this new season can reinvent fashion’s past, why not do the same with your jewellery?

Our personal styles tend to change naturally over the years and it can be challenging to know whether it’s better to sell a piece of jewellery that doesn’t suit your personality anymore, or if you can somehow find a way to reinvent what you already own, especially if it has sentimental value. One of our clients has an utterly modern style but also appreciates design elements from the past in her accessories. She was given an 18ct gold bypass ring with two old European-cut diamonds from her grandmother and she wanted to use it for her engagement ring.

Taking inspiration from a design seen at the Biennale des Antiquaires 2014, we designed a ring in a similar bypass style with a crown setting for the old European cut diamonds. Using both pink and white diamonds in a bead setting, an ombre effect was created from fancy-intense pink to colourless in a milgrained ¾ eternity band. The juxtaposition of modernity (rose gold) and antiquity (milgrain, old European-cuts) is the perfect representation of our client’s taste.

The Wonderous Colours Of The Sapphire

Last week, we treated you to a selection of scintillating blue sapphires and now, we present you with their bodacious brethren. Are you ready to think outside of the colour box?

Non-blue sapphires are typically called fancy-sapphires which is very similar to how coloured diamonds are categorised. Yellow sapphires are an excellent choice for engagement rings because of their intense colour saturation, eye-clean clarity and accessibility.

This 2.0 carat emerald-cut yellow sapphire is flanked with straight diamond baguettes and bead-set round-brilliant diamonds on the shank giving it an unmistakable Art Deco feel.

Much like yellow sapphires, pink sapphires are also an affordable alternative to the rare pink diamond. Pink sapphires come in a variety of tones and have recently been used by many couture-jewellery designers to achieve that perfect pop of colour.

This 18ct rose gold engagement ring features pink sapphires encrusting the design from the halo down to the shank. The rose gold accentuates the vibrant pink hue of the sapphires and makes the overall design very feminine.

How much does an engagement ring cost?

Our customers are all looking for the perfect ring for themselves or their partner and while they often have a good idea of what they are after, they do not always know how much different diamonds and rings actually cost.

We hope this post sheds some light on pricing for engagement rings and diamonds to help you choose a ring you will love that also fits comfortably within your price point.

Before we dive in, it is worth mentioning that at Rare Pink our collection engagement rings start at around £700/$800 (for a 0.30ct diamond – see how large a 0.30ct is here), while our bespoke, custom designed rings start in the region of £1,500/$2,000 with a similar sized diamond or larger gemstone.

On average, our engagement rings are priced at around £3,000/$4,000 and we have made rings that are priced at over £50,000/$60,000.

Most customers have some idea of the amount they would like to spend on a ring. With this in mind, start off by asking yourself:

“What ring style, metal and type of gem will my other half prefer?”

The main points to consider that will affect the price of an engagement ring are the type of diamond or gemstone and its carat weight as this will often affect around 80% of the ring’s value.

What carat weight should I go for?

Diamond’s carat weight refers to the weight of a diamond, not its size.

A one carat diamond simply means 0.2 grams of diamond.

To give you an insight into how a diamond’s carat weight affects its price, here is an average list of prices for a traditional solitaire engagement ring with a round cut diamond with a clarity of VS2 set in an 18 carat white gold ring:

0.30ct – £703

0.50ct – £1,160

0.70ct – £1,636

1.00ct – £3,523

You can browse through over 100,000 diamonds on our diamond search tool to discover how much different types of diamonds retail for. You will notice that as well as carat weight, the shape, colour, cut and clarity will also affect a diamond’s price.

We recommend an Excellent cut, G or H coloured diamond with a VS1 or VS2 clarity as a great value for money option.

Round diamond or a different shape?

If you are keen to stick to a strict budget, it is worth noting that diamonds of the same carat weight, but of a different shape will be priced differently. Round diamonds carry a premium over other shapes like the cushion, oval and princess cut, so choosing a fancy shape will often provide you with better value than choosing a round diamond.

Elongated diamond shapes like the marquise (as pictured), oval- and emerald-cut often seem larger in appearance and are also more affordable than round shaped diamonds.

A 1 carat H colour VS1 round diamond is currently retailing for around £4,500 compared to a 1ct cushion shape with the same cut, colour and clarity, retailing for around £2,770 (a 40% saving for the same carat weight).

Looking for some colour? Here is how coloured diamonds and gemstones are priced:

Engagement rings with a pink centre diamond start from around £10,000 (this price is from around £4,000 for a yellow centre diamond). We recently crafted this ring with a 0.7 carat fancy intense cushion cut pink diamond which retailed for over £50,000, demonstrating the value and scarcity of pink diamonds.

Rings with pink side diamonds or centre sapphires can start from around £2,000 but may end up being priced at over £8,000.

If your budget can’t stretch to include a pink centre diamond, but your heart is still set on featuring an element of colour in your ring, you have a couple of options that will lead to a stunning finished piece.

You could include small pink, yellow or blue diamonds around the halo or pavé setting of your ring, which would carry a lower price point but still give you access to the much sought after coloured diamond finish. This double halo split shank with pink diamonds around the 1.8 carat centre stone was priced at circa £13,000 to £15,000.

Alternatively, coloured sapphires as centre stones are a popular choice to use instead of coloured diamonds and carry a lower price point, which means your ring can be crafted with a larger coloured centre stone, for a fraction of the price of a diamond.

To purchase a pink oval cut sapphire of a similar carat weight to this, you would expect to pay around £3,500, making sapphires a far more affordable alternative to a coloured diamond.

At Rare Pink, we include a complimentary pink diamond on the inside of all of our bespoke engagement rings and a pink sapphire on the inside of all of our collection jewellery and rings – it’s a little secret that only you and your partner will share.

Bespoke rings carry a small premium over our collection pieces because they take more time and effort to craft.

Bespoke engagement rings carry a higher price point than collection pieces due to the sheer amount of extra work that must go into them. They are one-of-a-kind designs that need to be designed and tested before they go into production.

Our bespoke service typically starts at £1,500 if using a gemstone or a very small diamond and are priced from £3,000 if using a centre diamond above 0.7 carat. The bespoke fee covers the entirely unique design process, the materials, manufacturing, polishing and engraving services.

So, as a smart shopper, how do I maximise the value I receive when considering the engagement ring’s cost?

Go for a diamond that has a G/H colour and VS2 clarity. This combination looks stunning and does not carry the premium of higher clarities and colours.
Choose a ring setting without side diamonds. Solitaire settings can be purchased at price points far below those of rings with side diamonds or accent stones.
If the size of the centre stone is important, choose a gemstone over a diamond. You can get a 1-2 or even 3ct + sapphire or ruby at a fraction of the price of a diamond and because these often come in a variety of colours including yellow, pink and blue, you can create a truly unique piece using coloured gemstones.

The History of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for as long as we can remember – but how many of us actually know the history of Valentine’s Day?

The festival, so feverishly celebrated around the world, has only recently become synonymous with the notion of romantic love. Valentine’s Day has its roots going back to the Christian and Roman tradition, legend has it that during the 3rd century, a Roman Emperor named Claudius II outlawed marriage for all young soldiers. Claudius’ argument was that single men made better soldiers as they were devoid of distraction. Enter Saint Valentine, a priest of Rome, who not only saw the Emperor’s injustice to single men, but also decided to defy him by secretly performing marriages for soldiers.

Claudius decided to imprison Saint Valentine. According to legend, Claudius grew to be impressed by Valentine and offered him the option of converting to Roman paganism in exchange for Valentine’s life. But Valentine wasn’t so easily fooled – he proposed a counter offer to convert the Emperor to Christianity!

Infuriated by Saint Valentine’s audacity, Claudius executed him. Whilst imprisoned awaiting his fate, Valentine reportedly cured the jailer’s, Asterius, daughter of her blindness. Before his death, he left Asterius a letter signed “Your Valentine,” an expression which later became famous in modern Valentine’s Day letters.

Valentine’s Day as we know it now

It was only during the Middle Ages that Valentine’s Day began to be seen as a day to celebrate courtly love, and by the 1900s, cards for Valentine’s Day had started to manufacture, and who was to know that in the next hundred years or so, almost a billion Valentine’s Day cards would be sold each year? This makes Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, after Christmas.

Call For Transparent Diamond Grading in the Industry

Here at Rare Pink we are supporting Ernie Blom, president of the WFDB in his campaign for cracking down on the issue of over grading in the industry.

We only use GIA graded diamonds like some other online jewellers. This is to ensure that all our customers have piece in mind in what they are buying and that all our diamonds are ethically sourced.

You can read Ernie Blom’s letter written to the industry below.

Colleagues and friends,

The diamond industry is facing a serious challenge to its integrity which could lead to major consumer confidence problems, if diamonds are sold with overstated certification. I want to stress that this is an industry problem that must be resolved by the industry in order to retain consumer confidence in our product and sustain and develop the international diamond trade.

Recently awareness was raised regarding problems existing within a specific laboratory group and the overstating of grading from certain laboratories in this group, which has led to the exclusion of said laboratories certificates by the Rapaport Group.,

Your attention is drawn to the following issues:

(a) Ethical grading and certification are the most basic principles of the industry and these cannot be compromised.

(b) As part of the sales transaction the seller of diamonds provides a guarantee to the buyer of what is being sold and this forms a binding contract between the two parties. The seller cannot later hide behind an overstated grading report claiming ignorance as he/she will be held responsible regardless of any grading report supplied with the diamond(s) being sold. Diamantaires cannot hide behind certificates with the excuse that these goods sell cheaper. There is a common standard of colours and purities, and it is not about price but quality.

(c) In blatant cases the misrepresentation can amount to fraud with criminal consequences, depending on a countries consumer laws.

(d) Member Bourses must implement action in countries experiencing this kind of practice:
(i) If the offending party is a member, then the bourse concerned should take action under its own rules.
(ii) If the offending party is not a member, then the bourse concerned should report it to that countries consumer rights regulator in order to protect consumers rights..

On behalf of the Board and with regard to this issue, I commit the WFDB to ensure that we resolve matters as quickly as possible. We cannot reserve our position whilst this kind of practice prevails from a few laboratories that are damaging the entire diamond industry. Decisive and immediate action is required to eliminate this practice and the WFDB is in terms of its mandate compelled to take the lead. To this end a meeting will shortly be called of all the major laboratories to find common ground on the way forward.

I call on all responsible stakeholders across the world to stand together to eliminate this practice as it will harm our industry in a way that could dwarf any previous problems faced by the diamond industry.

Fact or Fiction. Diamonds

I thought it be wise sharing some of my insights about the modern diamond industry and clearing up fact from fiction when it comes to these precious stones. Here are 5 short and interesting facts that I can guarantee most of you wont know!

Fact 1.

Diamond is the hardest “natural” substance known to man however, it is no longer the hardest substance. It lost its sparkle a little in 2009 when researchers created a synthetic substance called, wait for it… Wurtzite boron nitride. Although not ready for commercial use, it can widthstand almost 18% more stress than diamonds.

Fact 2.

Most diamonds come from Africa. Yes this is true to some extent, as Botswana in particular is the largest producer of diamonds only by Value. The Jwaneng mine in Botswana is so vast and mineral rich, it has its own airport and Diamonds on average account for 30% of the GDP for the country. Most diamonds however, are not polished nor cut in Africa. In fact doing a quick search of diamonds, African cut diamonds are more expensive than their counterparts in India and Hong Kong.

Fact 3.

India is now the largest manufacturer of diamonds. 11 out of 12 diamonds in jewellery are now cut and polished there. 65% by value, 85% by volume and 92% by pieces of the world diamond production. Almost 3,000,000 people are directly employed in the diamond industry in India. To give context, the entire Luxury workforce in Europe amounts to only 500 000.

Fact 4.

As rare diamonds are, they are unlike Gold and Platinum which are finite. Only 20% of mined diamonds are actually gem quality. The rest are used in the high tech manufacturing industries for cutting and drilling due to their strength. In fact only one polished diamond out of 1000 weighs more than 1 Carat. So if you or your partner will receive anything over 1 carat, it is pretty rare.

Fact 5.

The United States alone accounts for 40% of total worldwide Gem Quality diamond consumption, and yet Russia produces the most diamonds in terms of Volume…

Bespoke Engagement Ring #100 – The Story of How We Started

People often ask me, “what is the story behind Rare Pink?”. Why the name and why bespoke engagement rings? In celebration of a massive milestone for our company, I’d like to share our story with you:

The London team celebrates our one hundredth bespoke engagement ring.

In the beginning…

Two years ago I got a call from Piers requesting we meet up for a chat. Piers is a friend from university days and when I got the call, at the time we were already trading in diamonds, but we had yet to come up with a great idea to enter the jewellery market. The meeting we were about to have was instrumental in shaping the vision behind what we now do at Rare Pink (but more about that later on).

In our meeting Piers told me he was madly in love with Jenni and he wanted to create her a truly unique and beautiful ring; a ring that would be inspired by his many hours of day dreaming, sketching ideas and researching engagement rings online. Piers is an innovator and a great product designer, so going for something off-the-shelf was just not going to be good enough.

We created what would become our first ever bespoke engagement ring, working very closely with Piers and his sometimes great and sometimes wacky ideas. It took us months to go through the cycle, from idea to finished piece. This cycle can now take as little as 5 days (if we are REALLY pushed for time).

The unique result of Piers’ ideas and our commitment to shipping our first ever bespoke design can be seen below:

Rare Pink’s first ever bespoke engagement ring – the ‘Jenni’ ring.

The “Jenni” ring is inspired by both Jenni’s profession (she is a botanist) with organic vines running down the shoulders and Pier’s meticulous attention to detail. It was a ring completely matching its proposal as Jenni and Piers got engaged in the Amazon jungle soon after.

The next step…

After completing the journey of making our first ever bespoke engagement ring, we started talking to friends and clients, asking them what they thought about the idea of investing some times to create a unique ring as opposed to just buying an off-the-shelf piece.

We got some really amazing feedback. We realised that when shopping for an engagement ring, most guys don’t naturally think “custom made” at first. However, when introduced to the idea of buying a ring with a story unique to them and their loved one, they love the concept.

We wanted the uniqueness and rarity of each ring to be exemplified by our brand name and so after some thought we concluded, what better brand ambassador for our company than the rare pink diamond – one of the rarest and most beautiful of all diamonds. Thus Rare Pink was born.

We also made a decision there and then, that our bespoke experience and custom design offering would not just be some thing we offer on the side – it would BE our entire business and thus differentiate us from all our competitors with the really strong emotional appeal that our rings would offer in comparison to their standardised products.

100 unique stories

12 months since finishing our first bespoke engagement ring, I am very pleased and excited to announce that we have made and delivered our 100th ring. That is 100 unique stories that went into the design of each and every single ring.

A massive thank you to everyone involved, including the investors who believe in us, our amazing team who “make business happen” and of course you, our clients, for putting your faith in us by not only sharing your stories with us, but also making us a part of your story!

Looking forward to the next 100 and then who knows, perhaps 1,000+ in the years to follow.

Proposal Stories: The Perfect Match – A World Cup Engagement

Leon proposed to his girlfriend Paula mid-match

With the World Cup taking over our screens this summer, you might suppose that most men would be too busy watching the football to be thinking about getting down on one knee and proposing. However, one of our customers, Leon Hart found a way of combining the two – proposing to his girlfriend Paula with one of our diamond engagement rings mid-match at the World Cup in Brazil.

An avid football fan, Leon convinced Paula to accompany him on a two week trip to Brazil where they would support the England and Colombia teams. Having planned in secret to propose at one of the matches during their trip, Leon needed an engagement ring in time for their departure. With only one month until they were due to leave, Leon got in contact with us to present us with a challenge.

The difficulty was going to be keeping his plans a secret from Paula – as a couple who live and work together, they’re rarely apart. Once we knew the deal, we pulled out all the stops to help ensure Leon’s romantic intentions remained a secret. Everything went to plan – we’re well practiced in the art of discretion and Paula remained none-the-wiser until Leon got down on bended knee.

While Paula was away one weekend, Leon undertook the difficult task of discovering her ring size. But unable to find any of Paula’s rings to guide him, Leon found himself facing a dilemma. That’s when his flatmate piped up that Paula had tried one of his rings only a few months before and it had been a perfect fit! We sent one of our guys out ASAP to meet with them and identify the size of the ring in question.

When the time came, mid-way through last weekend’s match between Belgium and Russia, Leon got down on one knee and popped the question, presenting Paula with the stunning diamond engagement ring. Paula told us she was so overwhelmed that she spent the rest of the game in a daze and couldn’t even remember the final score! We’re so happy to have been a part of this fantastic proposal, it’s definitely one we’ll be talking about for a while. Congratulations to Leon and Paula on their engagement!
