The rainbow has long been a symbol of hope, inclusion, and pride, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. Since the first Pride flag was flown back in the ‘70s, its colours have gone on to become powerful emblems that shine a bright light on identity, celebrate unity, and encourage continued resilience. Each colour of the original rainbow Pride flag, as well as those on the newer, more inclusive variations, has its own distinct meaning.

These shades aren’t just abstract ideas, they carry a lot of weight and history with them. As a jewellery brand, we love celebrating one’s identity and experiences through gemstones and precious metals, and designs that express our truths. Each colour can also be beautifully reflected through a meaningful birthstone, or a ring crafted to empower and uplift. This way, you can celebrate Pride through personal jewellery that carries both beauty and meaning.

A Brief History of the Pride Flag

The first rainbow flag, as we knew it, was designed by artist and activist Gilbert Baker in 1978 for San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day parade. Originally, it featured eight colours, each with a specific meaning assigned to it. Over time, the design was modified, resulting in the now-familiar six-stripe flag.
More recently, updated versions of the iconic flag, like the Progress Pride Flag, have been introduced to better reflect the full spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community, including people of colour, transgender individuals, and many others historically marginalised within the movement.

As personalities evolve and the spectrum widens, it’s clear that there is a world of colour and brightness out there. The symbolism and astrological powers of certain gemstones can also infuse and amplify some of the hues on the flag, and auras that glow within each individual person.

Three carat ruby

Ruby Red

Red is the first stripe of the rainbow flag and is said to symbolise life. This primary colour is fiery, bold, and represents strength and vitality. It’s like the blood that unites all people, as well as the shared experiences of the LGBTQ+ community.

As July’s birthstone, the ruby is associated with passion and courage. Known for its deep red hue and exceptional hardness (second only to the mighty diamond), the ruby is the perfect gemstone to symbolise enduring love, perseverance, and an unmatched strength of spirit. In ancient cultures, rubies were believed to hold the power of life within them, which is a fitting tribute to this colour’s meaning. When worn with rose gold, which is a warm, romantic metal will enhance the ruby’s fiery tone and add even more heart. It’s a great gemstone for an engagement ring, necklace or earrings that embrace all the life and love that comes our way.

Red orange pair

Orange is the New Orange

The juicy orange represents healing, reminding us of the importance of self-care, community support, and the ongoing journey within. Sapphires come in their very own spectrum of colours, and there are many beautiful shades of orange to be found. A more dusky version can suit an introvert, and a burst of citrus exuberance will appeal to all the extroverts.

They come in many facets, just like personalities and dating profiles, so choosing a piece of jewellery with an orange motif is a lovely way of putting one’s wellness and self-care first. After all, looking at a beautiful ring is known to raise endorphins.

Yellow gold was historically believed to promote positivity, so this metal can add warmth to any orange tone stone.

Sunny Yellow Delight

This cheerful hue symbolises sunlight, warmth, and the joy of being one’s true self. It’s a colour of optimism, energy, and visibility. There are quite a few yellow stones that can help celebrate this feeling of elation and breeziness.

Yellow sapphires are known in astrology for bringing prosperity and wisdom. Citrine, the November birthstone, has long been associated with positivity and abundance, and its bright, golden tones are perfect for representing hope and light. Then, there’s the elusive yellow diamond. If it’s good enough for the iconic Samantha Jones, it’s good enough for us.

Yellow gold is a natural fit with these gemstones as it’s classic and cosy. It enhances the brightness of any yellow gemstone, adding even more warmth and glow to the look of the piece. A great way to celebrate the joy that this colour is meant to represent.

Emerald Green For Nature

Green represents the natural world, and is a hue that’s about grounding and growth. It reminds us of the beauty in diversity and the importance of nurturing one another.

Many green gems have lots of positive connotations and connect with nature on a deeper level. The emerald, May’s birthstone, has historically symbolised renewal and rebirth. With its lush green tones, it connects us to the natural world and to new beginnings. Peridot, which is lighter and more citrus-toned, is associated with compassion and harmony.

The trusty sapphire can also present in many beautiful shades of green, and its strength and endurance connect perfectly to the sentiment of the colour in the flag. Icy cool metals like white gold or silver can contrast beautifully with rich green stones, symbolising balance and standing your ground.

Serene Blue Sapphires

Blue signifies serenity, peace, and reflection. It ties into some of the hippy influences still abundant in the 1970s. It’s about finding calm amongst the chaos of change and staying true to oneself.

A blue sapphire, which also happens to be the September birthstone, symbolises wisdom, truth, and protection, all qualities that should be celebrated through Pride month and beyond. Aquamarine, which can be incorporated into a Signature Stone or proudly displayed on a cherished pendant, is another great way of celebrating blue in a more subtle way.

Its gentle sea-blue hues are thought to soothe emotions and promote clarity, aligning perfectly with this flag stripe’s calming message. Rare, pure, and durable, platinum pairs well with cooler gemstones, further embracing the serene strength of this colour.

Spirited Violet

Violet is the final stripe on the original Pride flag. It represents the spirit and the essence of individuality, as well as the soul’s deep resilience and fabulousness.

The gorgeous Amethyst is February’s birthstone and has long symbolised spiritual insight and inner peace. Its royal purple tone evokes creativity and strength, while its history in ancient rituals and sacred traditions ties it to deeper spiritual meaning. It’s truly got it all. For a stronger gem with just as much history and power, a purple sapphire is a rare and awe-inspiring choice.

These purple gemstones look great with any metal. Yellow gold will make it seem more regal and opulent, while a cooler white gold or platinum will lean into the spirituality and mysticism of the hue.

Jewellery That Tells a Story

In the Progress Pride Flag, additional colours reflect the evolving movement. Black and brown represent LGBTQ+ people of colour and the need to address racial inequalities. Pink, white, and light blue represent the transgender community, inspired by the Transgender Pride Flag. These additions are a call to honour the diverse voices within the community, and they offer many ways to create truly personal and representative jewellery pieces. And trust us that there are diamonds and sapphires that look good in all of those hues.

Whether you choose a rainbow-inspired necklace, a pride ring set with multicoloured gems, or a single stone that resonates with your personal journey, jewellery offers a powerful way to wear your story with pride.

We offer custom pieces, incorporating ethically sourced gemstones, recycled metals, and inclusive design approaches. It’s not all about colour, it’s about meaning, identity, and celebration that show pride every single day.
