Birthstone Jewellery

Birthstones and astrology are so important to so many people and that extends to jewellery in a big way, with many wanting to incorporate these celestial themes into meaningful heirlooms. Changing your plans when Mercury is in retrograde, deciding the fact that your date has a Pisces moon is a red flag, or running out to buy a lottery ticket because your horoscope says so is something we’ve all done (or at least considered doing) at some point in our lives. So why not wear a ring or bracelet that grounds your aura, energises your soul or brings you luck?

Gems and crystals have long been known to represent seasons and influence moods, and there’s just something special about a piece of jewellery that the universe has created especially with you in mind. Journey with us throughout the year to learn more about which stone has the most power during your birthday month and get inspired by some beautiful pieces that will help guide you on your journey through space and time.

January: Garnet Birthstone Jewellery

A fresh year means a fresh start and we kick off in style with garnet, which is known for its deep red hues symbolising romance, passion and love. It’s said to be a talisman offering protection during travels and many cultures perceive it as a stone of regeneration and vitality.

Though it comes in a variety of colours, its most ubiquitous iteration is a rich red, often compared to the shade of pomegranate seeds, ranging from deep, dark burgundy to vibrant, fiery shades. They can also appear in hues of orange, yellow, green, purple, brown, and sometimes, even blue. The specific colour variations depend on the type of garnet as well as its chemical composition and any impurities present within the stone.

Crafted into garnet necklaces and garnet earrings, the garnet birthstone jewellery offers the gift of self-expression, with its historical ties to love, strength, and spiritual growth making it a cherished piece of jewellery for all those with a January birthday.

Fiore OV WG Tanzanite on ear

December: Tanzanite Birthstone Jewellery

Tanzanite is December’s birthstone and is known for displaying a stunning range of blues – from a lighter violet to deep blue with purple undertones. Found in only one location in the world – near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, its limited geographic occurrence contributes to its rarity.

Tanzanite is believed to have metaphysical properties associated with transformation and spiritual growth and is said to help overcome challenges and embrace positive change.

Its colour and ability to complement various metal settings make it versatile for a wide range of jewellery designs. Whether set in white gold, yellow gold, or platinum, tanzanite can enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of any piece.

Tanzanite is pleochroic, meaning it can display different colours when viewed from different angles. This optical phenomenon adds to the gemstone’s visual interest and makes each piece of tanzanite jewellery somewhat unique.

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or embracing the spiritual significance of your birthstone, there are many ways to express yourself throughout jewellery. Let the stars, moon and stones guide you.

What is a birthstone?

A birthstone is a gem that’s typically linked to a person’s birth month or zodiac sign and symbolises that specific time period. These gemstones often find their place as jewellery, worn to celebrate one’s birthday, special occasions or even as sort of talismans.

Why might somebody buy birthstone jewellery?

Replete with symbolism and personal meaning, birthstones can not only represent your celestial past but can also reflect important moments of life – often used to celebrate an anniversary or other memorable occasion that happened during a specific time of the year.  Similarly, our Signature Ruby which we include in all our rings, can be personalised and customised to suit each couple and their experiences. Whether it’s the month they met, the birth month of a child, or, an actual birthstone.

Birthstone jewellery offers a personalised touch, allowing for ultimate self-expression. From bracelets and rings to necklaces and earrings, they feature specific gemstones, personifying unique traits and meanings. Crafted in various styles and designs, they envoke love, protection, and harmony, carrying individual significance to each wearer. Birthstone jewellery can serve as a heartfelt gift marking various milestones, or it can be worn as a personal lucky charm, blending aesthetics with a lot of sentimental value.

Why should I consider a birthstone necklace?

A birthstone necklace often showcases the wearer’s gemstone, aligning with their unique identity and symbolism. Worn close to the heart, it carries even deeper meaning and power. From minimalist pendants to intricate designs, birthstone necklaces are versatile and suitable for daily wear as well as being able to shine at special occasions. Whether gifted to celebrate milestones or worn as a personal talisman, a birthstone necklace not only looks beautiful but also carries sentimental value and a sense of individuality.

Why should I choose birthstone earrings?

Birthstone earrings that feature the wearer’s gemstone, can symbolise unique qualities and connections. From classic studs to dangling designs, birthstone earrings serve as reminders of love, luck, or attributes linked to the stone, silently whispering affirmations and words of encouragement in your ear. Whether gifted to commemorate special moments or worn as a daily signature, birthstone earrings combine beauty with personal meaning, making them a cherished and stylish addition to any jewellery collection. At Taylor & Hart, you can go a step further in the personalisation journey by engraving some meaningful words onto the back fastenings.

Why should I consider a birthstone bracelet?

A birthstone bracelet can be such a special piece of jewellery, encircling the veins in your wrist, ensuring the power of the stone travels all the way to your heart to be felt throughout. Intricately highlighting the wearer’s gemstone, there are many designs to choose from, from sleek chains to beaded arrays. Each gem represents unique attributes, with healing properties and spiritual connections, infusing the accessory with deeper meaning. Our bracelets can also be engraved to make them unique to each wearer.

Should I consider a birthstone ring?

A birthstone ring can be a wonderful way of celebrating your birthday month, and while quite a few of them aren’t the best choice for engagement rings due to durability reasons (find out more in the question below), there are still ways to incorporate them into your designs.

You could opt for a birthstone ring that isn’t intended for everyday wear, you could embed it into a thicker bezel, or you could make it one of the side stones.

We also offer the opportunity to set any of the birthstones on the inside of your ring as a chance to ensure you’re including the birthstone in another meaningful way. Read more about how your signature gemstone can be customised here

Would you recommend birthstones for engagement rings?

Unfortunately not. While birthstones are a wonderful way of expressing yourself and your style, sadly not all of them are suitable for use in engagement or wedding rings.

An engagement ring is worn everyday and on a part of the body that is susceptible to most knocks and contact with other materials. That’s why our guidelines on which materials we’ll use for engagement and wedding rings are so stringent–it’s our promise that your ring is crafted exclusively with materials that will last a lifetime when worn with care.

With this in mind, we’ll exclusively craft engagement rings using the following gemstones:

  • Diamonds
  • Sapphires
  • Rubies
  • Emeralds (special attention must be paid to how these are set to ensure optimal security)
  • Tourmaline

We craft pieces that won’t be worn on the hand using the remaining birthstones, like necklaces or earrings. There are several reasons why we don’t recommend the following gemstones for jewellery that’s intended to be worn on the hand. These reasons range from the gemstone’s hardness, their susceptibility to being abraded or scratched easily, or their tendency to fade or go dull when coming into contact with everyday items like hand soap, lotions or perfumes.

The birthstones we won’t use to craft engagement or wedding rings are:

  • Garnet
  • Amethyst
  • Aquamarine
  • Alexandrite
  • Peridot
  • Topaz
  • Tanzanite

What are the historical origins of birthstones?

The roots of birthstones trace back to biblical times and connect with the twelve months and zodiac signs. Over time, interpretations varied widely, influencing practices such as associating stones with apostles and wearing them monthly. The tradition of a single birthstone emerged relatively recently, with origins mentioning both eighteenth-century Poland and sixteenth-century Germany.

How are birthstones linked to astrology?

Many cultures link gemstones not just to birth months but to celestial bodies, utilising astrology to identify stones beneficial for people based on their birth details. For instance, Hinduism associates nine gems with celestial forces (Navaratna), recommending specific stones for protection based on astrological calculations at birth.
