White diamonds are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow), a classification scale created by the Gemological Institute of America. With standardised grading, diamond buyers can make more informed purchases.
At Taylor & Hart, we only use GIA-graded centre diamonds in our designs. Each diamond comes with an accompanying certificate stating its colour, clarity, carat and cut grade.
Grades D – F are colourless and icy white. These are considered the highest colour grades.
Grade G – I are nearly colourless, with distinctions so subtle most are indistinguishable to the untrained eye.
We recommend an I grade and above.
Another aspect of diamond colour is fluorescence, a blue glow that appears when you expose a diamond to UV light. In normal daylight, a diamond with a strong fluorescence looks cloudy. We only retail diamonds with fluorescence grades of none, faint and medium fluorescence.
When choosing a diamond, consider fluorescence last.
Our consultants are available to help you to better understand the importance of colour in a diamond and how this affects the design of your diamond engagement ring.
