Behind the Design: Ash & Evan

What started as a surprise day out organised by Evan in a sunny location would soon turn into something far more magical for Ash. YouTubers Ash & Evan met back in 2020 and call themselves a ‘Corona Couple’. Having slid into his DMs after seeing a viral video he posted, Ash was impressed by how sweet and ‘gentle’ Evan turned out to be.

They developed an online friendship which blossomed into wanting to meet up in person. Meet up they did, their first outing being a hike along the Bugembe Hill with a secret romantic picnic waiting at the summit. Evan brought his adorable dog, Tia, just to ensure he made the best first impression. They ended up dancing to Señorita in the middle of the wilderness.

Though this was their first meeting, it wasn’t their first date at all. They stayed friends for a further few months before their relationship blossomed into something more. After a health scare and spell at the hospital, Ash rushed to Evan’s side which made him realise how important she was to him, after which they made things official.

After many travels together, viral TikToks, successful Vlogs and exciting photo shoots, came time for the proposal. It was an elaborate affair, with a decoy ‘chance photo shoot’, a live stream with Ash’s family in Kampala and a speech translated into Runyankole.

The couple strolled into the botanical gardens on a cliffside of the Costa Brava, with the soundtrack of Spanish Flamenco playing in the background.

Evan had secretly organised for the videographer and photographer to bump into the couple while they were vlogging their walk to the gardens. They explained that they were waiting for two models who were running late and asked if Ash & Evan would be their practice shot subjects. Ash fell for it and excitedly obliged, thinking it ‘was like those moments on TikTok when a photographer asks if they can take your picture.’

‘We posed in different spots as we made our way down the garden to a circle area at the cliff’s edge as the sunset’ Evan explains. ‘There was a large heart outlined by colourful seashells in the centre of the circle, and when we got to the bottom, the guitarist started playing. Ash gasped, saw my mom, and started crying as I proposed in her mother language.’

I know you don’t like long speeches, so I will make this short. Someone once said seashells are like love letters in the sand. So this is my love letter to you. Will you be mine forever?

The ring was nothing short of spectacular. Evan chose a modified Lantana, featuring a pear shape centre diamond accented by a fanning cluster of marquise diamonds.

He was drawn to the unique centre stone because of the pointed shape gave the feeling of the centre jewel of a crown and explains ‘I wanted it to be like a crown on her finger.’

Certain the blush hue would look perfect on Ash, Evan opted for 18ct rose gold and finished it with an emerald signature stone that would fit with Ash’s existing jewellery collection. He always buys Ash malachite jewellery so he wanted to somehow incorporate that green colour she’s always wearing into the engagement ring design itself.

I came across the Lantana design and immediately I loved it. It looked like a star exploding. It was perfect because it felt like a symbol of how special Ash is. She’s like the star of my life and I wanted to represent that in a ring.

Evan

Every element of the ring design was considered and symbolised something special about the relationship between the couple. And that’s exactly what custom jewellery is all about, capturing the little details that make your love so extraordinary, and translating them into a design.

Ash absolutely loves the ring. I love it too and can’t believe how much it sparkles, even in the dark.

Ash & Evan got married on New Year’s Eve in Kampala with bespoke wedding rings. A fully modified version of the Diadem in rose gold to match the regal engagement ring for Ash and a classic white gold band for Evan.

In a beautiful strapless wedding gown by Fatumah Asha, the stunning bride took Evan’s breath away as she walked down the aisle. With tears in their eyes, they delivered heartfelt vows in front of their closest friends and family. The happy couple partied into the night with a crescendo of fireworks at midnight commemorating, not only a new year, but also a new life for the newlyweds.
