Know the 4 Cs
When it comes to diamonds, the 4Cs are your best friends. This stands for Colour, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight, which are the global standard for assessing diamond quality. Understanding these will help you compare these precious gems so you can make an informed decision.
Colour refers to how colourless the diamond is, with the most sought-after diamonds being completely colourless. Clarity measures the presence of any internal or external imperfections. The fewer the blemishes, the higher the clarity grade will be. Cut is all about how well the diamond has been shaped and faceted, and will directly affect its brilliance and sparkle. Finally, the carat weight measures the size of the diamond. While larger diamonds are often more expensive, the cut and quality can be just as important, if not more so.
A well-cut diamond with excellent clarity and a good colour grade will shine ever so brightly, even if it’s slightly smaller in carat weight. There’s no wrong or right as to what to go for, but it’s good to know these specifics when it comes time to pick the diamond for your engagement ring.
